A route comparison should include the activities each family member actually intends to undertake. The principal’s preferred offer or business does not automatically satisfy spouse employment, children’s study or individual timing needs. Hypothetical example: a neonatal-equipment sales manager receives a U.S. offer while the spouse plans to run an online language school and the child will turn twenty-one during an immigrant process. The decision is whether the principal’s route accommodates those separate plans, not whether the family agrees in principle to move. Each person’s status and timing needs a record of its own.
Record needs before choosing an option
Hypothetical example: the principal prefers one offer while the spouse expects to continue remote employment from the United States. Identify that work expressly, along with children’s ages and study plans. Record each person’s citizenship and relationship. A household preference is relevant to the decision but does not alter the immigration rules. Write a household activity table that says who will work, study, travel later or remain abroad. Decide whether the selected dependent status permits each activity before a contract or school place is accepted.
Preserve the differences between dependent statuses
TD does not authorize employment. Qualifying E and L spouses may have employment authorization incident to status with appropriate documentation; an employment authorization document is not universally required for them. Children do not receive work permission solely from TD, E or L status. These dependents may study while maintaining the applicable status, but study does not extend their authorized stay. Keep the principal route’s conditions visible: TD does not permit employment, while qualifying E and L spouses may have work authorization incident to status. Children’s study plans do not create a work right.
Reassess the family plan after selecting the route
Check each person’s actual admission and status records rather than assuming a common date or outcome. For immigrant plans, review derivative eligibility and any CSPA issue individually using the actual dates and visa availability. Filing does not automatically freeze age. Make work and school commitments from the real selected process and confirmed permission. Children in nonimmigrant dependent classifications age out at 21. Recheck status documents after admission and whenever travel changes. The decision to accept remote work, a campus job or a deferred school term belongs to the individual’s current permission.
Respect the order of immigrant entry
For an immigrant-visa family, the principal applicant must enter before or together with derivative family members. A preferred staggered move should be planned around that rule and each person’s actual documentation, not treated as an unrestricted choice of arrival order. For immigrant entry, plan the order of travel around the principal and derivatives rather than booking independently. A staggered move is a legal sequencing decision, not just a household convenience.
