THE SHORT ANSWER

Hypothetical example: a Douro-Dummer household plans a move where one spouse holds the offer, the other works as a paramedic and expects to find similar work, and a child intends to start college. Each of those expectations rests on an assumption that may not hold, and all three are cheaper to test now than to discover afterwards.

01

Assuming the spouse can work

Whether a spouse may work depends entirely on the category. For a TN principal’s spouse, TD allows residence and study but not employment. L-2 spouses and qualifying E spouses are employment-authorized incident to status. Those are very different household economics and the difference should be settled before a budget is built or a resignation is given. In every one of these categories, dependent children may attend school but do not obtain work permission through a parent's status, and a spouse who wants to work in a category that does not permit it needs their own independent basis.

02

Assuming permission to work means permission to practise

For regulated occupations these are separate and the second is usually slower. A paramedic, nurse, teacher or engineer moving from Ontario faces requirements set by the destination state, which commonly include verification sent directly from the Ontario regulator, examinations with limited sittings, and sometimes supervised practice. None of that is affected by immigration status. The question should be put to the state regulator in writing at the very start of planning, because the answer frequently determines whether the household's finances work, and it is the item most often discovered last.

03

Assuming a child's plans are unaffected

Derivative eligibility for children generally ends at twenty-one, and the date does not move for the convenience of a process. In immigrant categories the Child Status Protection Act contains provisions that can affect how a child's age is calculated in certain circumstances, and visa availability influences the timeline behind it, so the position is specific to the facts. Separately, a child intending to study should have their own plan examined rather than assumed to follow from the parent's status, since study and any work associated with it have their own rules. Ask what each young adult's independent route would be before it is needed.
