IN THIS GUIDE · Match the work to a named Appendix 2 profession before anything else
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Find the exact entry, not the closest-sounding one
Hypothetical example: an Otonabee-South Monaghan agronomist employed by a farm-supply cooperative is offered a field agronomy position with a United States seed company. Appendix 2 lists Agriculturist (including Agronomist), whose minimum credential is a baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree. The applicant's bachelor of science in agriculture answers that entry directly. Choosing a vaguer heading such as management consultant because the job includes advising growers weakens a file that was already strong.
The employer letter has to describe science, because the work is science
The letter should say what the agronomist will actually do: soil sampling and interpretation, plot trial design, fertility and crop-protection recommendations, yield-data analysis for the company's dealers. It should name the employer, the duration, the salary and the fact that the position is professional. It should not be padded with sales language. If half the year would be spent selling seed to farmers, that is a materially different job and the profession analysis must be run on the honest version.
Citizenship is the gate, and permanent residence does not open it
TN belongs to Canadian and Mexican citizens. A Canadian permanent resident card, however long held, does not create TN eligibility, and no employer letter can substitute for it. A Canadian citizen applies at a land border, a preclearance post or an airport port of entry with the passport and the supporting file, or the employer may file Form I-129 in advance. There is no visa stamp for Canadians, which is why the file has to persuade an officer in a single conversation.
Self-employment and ownership are examined, not assumed away
TN does not authorise self-employment in the United States. If the agronomist held shares in the seed company, or in a United States entity that would be paying her, the arrangement needs disclosure and analysis rather than silence. Holding an interest in the Canadian family farm is not itself a problem; it becomes one only if the American work is really being done for a business she controls. Separately, any state-level licensing the work requires is its own question and is not answered by a TN admission.
